Herman (left-11) and Katherine (10) were
murdered in separate beds on the second floor of the Moore house in Villisca, Iowa. Their
brothers were killed in the same bedroom and their parents were slain in an adjoining
room. Two visiting friends of Katherine, Lena and Ina Stillinger, died in the downstairs
bedroom. All were struck in the head with an axe belonging to the Moores. On the
morning of June 10, 1912 a neighbor, Mary Peckham, noticed the children were not at play
in the yard. She knocked on the door, and in the absence of a response, turned the
knob and found it locked. She quickly phoned a relative of the family and soon authorities
discovered Iowa's worst mass homicide. (photographs taken around 1910) |
